VHSL & site news - 98

OK, this is the hot spot. Here you'll find my little comments about the state of the game and other football goings-on.

Feb. 10 : I've noticed that some of my favorite sites don't save their old info, so I've set up an archive for mine.

If you didn't already know, I can be very critical of the VHSL sometimes. The only thing I'll say is that such an organization should be more, well, organized. (Did you notice the number of mistakes in their playoff program? Like the different ways the forfeits by EC Glass were listed for Heritage & Jefferson Forest, and the fact that Surry's 40-0 win over Mathews is not listed.)

July 24 : The VHSL has proposed a radical realignment plan for Group AA!
Why are there so many schedule changes this year?
Here's what's up with the ACLU lawsuit.
Info about the transfer rules.

Names in the news.

Aug. 18 : New page added : school nicknames.

Aug. 23 : As Grundy's former P.A. announcer, John Norris, used to say ...
IT'S FOOTBALL TIME IN THE BILLION-DOLLAR COALFIELDS!!!
YES, IT'S OFFICIAL. The 1998 season has started!!! And the first school to win a game is ........ GRUNDY!!!!
Soph. QB John Dales threw for 204 yards and 4 TD's in a 46-6 drubbing of Knott Co. Central in the Family Bank/Pepsi Bowl.

Added Bowl Championship Series links on my 2nd string links page.

What's it like to play in an area with a bunch of large schools?
For one thing, you can build a GREAT stadium and let all the schools play there. But what does that lead to? Just the #1 team in the country getting to play all but 2 games on the same field! Must be nice to be a Crabber.

Aug. 29 : Every number tells a story??? Of last years top 9 teams in Regions IV & D (6 district champions and 3 teams that went 9-1), six LOST their opening games . Powell Valley & Rye Cove were the lucky ones... they both won despite giving up 18 points apiece. The Eagles had the largest margin of victory, winning by 8 against a team that finished 3-7 last season. (Magna Vista was idle; the loses were by Gate City, Va. High, Graham, Carroll Co., Haysi & Appy). Should be an interesting year.

Let's see... 4 teams in Buchanan County. The 3 'A' teams are 0-2 with 4 TD's. Grundy is 2-0 with 110 points and 9 TD passes.

Oh, yeah, almost forgot! Created the finals countdown script for this page!

Aug. 30 : Boy, did I hit the nail on the head yesterday!
Last year's top ranked team in the nation saw their 40 game win streak come to an end.
Heritage (Newport News) needed 5 OT's to pull off the 14-8 upset of the Hampton Crabbers.

Sept. 27 : big Big BIG news about the proposed realignment plan.

Wow! Can you believe that the first playoff spot of the season can be clinched on Friday??? While over a dozen schools still haven't PLAYED a district game, Richlands is a win away from 'running the board' in the SWD. However, winning at Grundy isn't easy to do.

Oct 3 : Richlands clinched a post-season bid with last night's DOUBLE-OT win at Grundy. This is the earliest I can remember a team doing so. However, it will probably be another month before they know if they get a home game in the first round.

Oct 6 : The VHSL has posted their official numbers (in .pdf format).

Oct. 17 : Well, ya just had to figure, since it WAS Homecoming, that the cHokies would show up at Lane Stadium today. Nothing like a grand slam to help ease the pain, though. One down, 3 to go for the Yankees.

Oct. 22 : Yes, it's THAT time of year. The first forfeits of the year in SW Va. have been announced.

Oct. 26 : Thanks for dropping in during my first year on the web (around a thousand hits during this month alone!). If there's anything you'd like to see added or changed, drop me a line. I always look forward to checking the mail (note: was looking forward to the new Meg Ryan / Tom Hanks Christmas release... until I saw it's title... GIVE ME A BREAK!).

NETSCAPE USERS : The time change causes your bookmark file to act funny for a couple of days. Just click 'cancel' every time until it cures itself.

Nov. 7 : A ton of congratulations :
to Powell Valley, Martinsville and Salem for their perfect regular season records
and to St. Paul, whose win over Thomas Walker means that no team in either Regions IV or D went winless this season!

Posted the final regular season standings and power ratings.

Nov. 18 : Posted all the info about the state finals on the finals page.

Nov. 19 : Some odds & ends tonight : Still can't believe that a college team can lead a game for all but 2 plays while picking up a measly 6 first downs. While the loss will keep Tech from a big payday and a spot in the BCS, it should allow more students the opportunity to "road trip" to this year's bowl game down in (I 'm assuming) Titan territory (Tennessee).

Speaking of the Roanoke Valley ... word is that an indoor football league may be started by the folks who brought us the ECHL and the Star City could be helping kick it off in the Spring of 2000.

Dec. 1 : Va. Tech accepted a bid to play an SEC team in the 1st Music City Bowl at Vandy in Nashville on Tues., Dec. 29.
