VHSL & site news - '97
Nov. 8 : Wanna send a shout-out to my boys down in Stuart
(ahhhhhh, those Hot Fun Saturdays at Wayside Park).
Yo, Cougars, sorry you didn't make it to the play-offs, but
THANKS for nipin' those Bulldogs for us!!!!
Oh, and those predictions I made on Oct. 25 for the Group AA 1st round ??? :
Region 4 - Div. 4 : Abingdon @ Martinsville ; Grundy @ Carroll Co.
Region 4 - Div. 3 : Va. High @ Gate City ; Graham @ Magna Vista.
Well, in Div. 3, got Va. High right and missed the location of the Graham game.
In Div. 4, well, I'm MUCH happier the way things turned out ;-]
Nov. 13 : No Title IX controversy here.... check out the
girls basketball page.
Well, that Region 4 forfeit thing never developed :-)
The ratings within are for games played (and forfeited) before 5 p.m. on
Tues., Nov. 11.
For more info on the 15 forfeits for the 1997 season, see my
forfeits page.
NOTES :
A : State finals won't be played at neutral site !!! Full story was in the
Bristol
Herald Courier.
B : Garden forfeits wins against Narrows, Ervinton & J I Burton,
knocking them AND Pound from the play-offs! Thomas Walker & Coeburn
take their place.
C : Powell Valley suspends 15 players, 10 to miss 1st round game!
Story was in the
Bristol Herald Courier.
Dec. 1 :
Three schools try to repeat, 2 districts (Peninsula & Lonesome Pine)
shoot for 2, and a Division 1 re-match highlight state title weekend !!!
Check the bottom of the results page.
SCORES : Geez, why am I seeing 2 or 3 different scores for the same
game?!?!?!
CORRECT score #1 is William Fleming - 47, W. Potomac - 7.
I KNOW. I WAS THERE.
CORRECT score #2 is Gate City - 17, Jeff. Forest - 15. Thanks to
fellow RU guy
Steve Marcus, who was AT THAT ONE.
If you noticed that some of my scores are different than what the VHSL
program has, that's because I got 98% of my scores during the regular
season from media outlets statewide. My personal disdain for and past
experience with the VHSL prohibits me from even considering that their
scores may be right; therefore, the score I have from the regular
season will remain the one posted.
For the scores that I was unable to find during the regular season
(those ? - ? games), I WILL use the score in the VHSL program, but I
will leave a "?" there.
Did you notice the different ways the forfeits by EC Glass were
listed in the official program for Heritage & Jefferson Forest?
Did you notice that the Mathews game is not listed for Surry Co. in
the official program? Surry won 40-0 and went 7-3, not 6-3 as listed.
Well, it's time for our boys to move indoors for the Winter. Check
out the Grundy Wrestling
page, which Jason should be updating during break and again
after finals are over.
( NOTICE : Please set your bookmarks to the main
page or this page during Dec... I'm going renovate the site after the
1st of the year. Thanks. )
Dec. 7 : YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-HAAAAAAAAAA !!!!!!
Well done, S.W. VA !!!!!!!
While the Roanoke Valley was the hot-bed of girls basketball this season,
the mountain-men from 'the end' of VA. dominated the gridiron.
If you take a look at the state road map, you'll see that 3 of the 6 state
champions are happily nestled in grid D-7.
And CONGRATS !!! to our favorite half-brother, the Bluefield Beavers,
who went 14-0 to claim the W. Va. Class AA state title. The Beavers had
won 6 Class AAA titles between 1959 & 1984 before dropping to AA in 1993.
(If you didn't know, Bluefield and the Graham G-Men share Mitchell Stadium,
which is located in a city park about a half mile from the Va. state line
and was the site of a 1995 VHSL title game.)
Well, according to the state playoffs program, the VHSL is coming soon to a
computer near you !!!!! Yes, the VHSL is
now "on-line", and maybe, just maybe, they'll be worth bookmarking by next August.
Now, on a personal note, let me say "Thank You" to everyone who
visited and dropped me a line over the past 6 weeks. I NEVER imagined
I'd get 750 hits in such a short time. Having basically built the
site week-by-week, I left a lot of dead-ends. I'll be re-doing the
site in early '88, making it easier to navigate, and moving the
'old stuff' to another host. I'll continue answering your e-mail, but
I'll probably check it only about once a month now that the fat lady
has sung. In the words of former Richlands Blue Tornado color announcer
(and current Bristol Herald-Courier sports editor) Bucky Dent,
"Have a gooooooood night, everybody!".
FLASH : Dec. 13 : OK, this tops 'em all. It was announced in the Dec. 11th
edition of The Washington Post that Richard Montgomery (MD) H.S. has forfeited
all 7 of their victories this season. It seems that Montgomery Co. Md. instituted
a policy during the Summer of '96 that required all students to pay extra fees for
participating in extra-curricular activities (including sports, band, drama, etc.).
They used the '96-'97 school year as an 'initiation' year and began seriously enforcing
the rule in '97-'98. Well, at the start of basketball practice, a player said he wasn't
going to pay the fee, since he didn't have to pay to play football. A check showed that
3 players didn't pay their football fees, so the school forfeited all 7 victories.
Once again, a bunch of innocent kids were penalized due to an administrative snafu.
WAY TO GO, ADMINISTRATORS & COACHES.
Also, Oxon Hill (MD) announced in mid-Nov. that they had used an
ineligible player, forfeiting not only their 7 victories but also
their spot in the Maryland Group 4A quarter-finals.
FLASH 2 : (Jan. 23, 1998) : OK, this is better. The Montgomery Co. (Md) Public Schools
Athletic Association, in a closed-door meeting, reinstated the 7 victories that Richard
Montgomery H.S. had forfeited.
