Appalachia’s Travis Turner was one of nine student-athletes to receive the VHSL Achievement Award in May, given to students who have excelled in the classroom and in athletic and academic activities.

The Group A Male Athlete of the Year quarterbacked the Bulldogs to 3 state titles in four years, picking up all-state honors last year on both offense and defense, which made his selection as Group A Player of the Year a no-brainer. He was a four-year starter on the basketball team, scoring over 1,000 points while missing a month last season before of an ankle injury. He also earned All-State honors in track, while maintaining a 3.2 GPA.

He (and his $1,000 scholarship) will be at Tech this Fall.

Congratulations to the nine new members of the VHSCA & VHSL Hall of Fame.

Among those familiar to S.W. Virginians are Graham AD / football coach Glynn Carlock, J.J. Kelly baseball coach Roy Mack Shupe and former Parry McCluer principal / VHSL Executive Committee member Charles Kurtz.

Their induction will take place at Charlottesville’s Omni Hotel in mid-October.
